This year will be my first ever Australia Day away from home.
I never thought that I would miss home so much. I remember thinking before I left Sydney "not gonna miss this place at all, hell I don't know if I'll be back"... Well I do love London. But it has been one of those love hate relationships to be honest. I think now that it has been 11 months living and working in London I can fairly assess the pros and cons of London compared to Sydney.
So with that said here are some summarised thoughts pitting London against Sydney...
Sydney wins hands down every time. What can I say, there is absolutely no comparison to the freshness, taste, choice and price. One thing London wins on is cheese and cured meat, I guess you could say its a European thing. But for all you meat lovers out there (like me) prepare yourselves, meat is very expensive in London. A pub steak will on average set you back about £18 or $34AUD which tastes as good as a $8AUD pub steak in Sydney (let that process).
Thanks for making me eat more vegetarian meals in the last 10 months than the rest of my life!
London wins this round by a fair margin. I can really only speak for the creative industry here but I can sum it up quite quickly. Sydney's creative job market is like that indie published graphic novel your distant friend from college made in his basement and London is Marvel.
London wins again, pretty simple. Your on an island but its not a million mile from anywhere, its a weekend jaunt to Paris. Sorry Sydney.
Lifestyle & Weather:
This ones tough but I have to give it to Sydney. You cant beat the weather in Sydney and the weather makes such a big difference. Always warm always beautiful you find you can only complain because its too hot and sometimes you actually want it to rain cause its just to damn hot. Ah the weekends spent chilling in cold spa watching the cricket whilst drinking beer and eat sausage rolls mmm...
The drinking culture has decided this one for me. Sydney's drinking culture is horrible, ever been cut off when your actually the designated driver? I have. Not my fault I'm a horrible dancer - really I'm cut off cause I'm crunking to David Bowie "breaking my balls man". So yer London wins this one, London wins this one worldwide. I love beer and I love drinking in pubs and talking shit for hours on end, just so happens the Brits do this on a daily basis rain, hail or rain everyone is at the pub from 5pm onwards every night!
So who wins? Looking at it, it really depends on who you are I guess. I'm working my ass off and loving it so London suits me just fine. What do you guys think?
